Harbour view with fishing boats. Oil on canvas, wooden frame. Bottom left signed "Sha Qi" and "8.1938" (in Chinese characters), "SADJI". On the reverse of the frame in pencil: "SADJI 1938.8.".
Former European private collection
Sha Qi (1914-2006), also known as "Sadji" in Europe, came from the Yin Community of Zhejiang Province and was a student of Xu Beihong. It was Xu who introduced him to the Brussels Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1937. There he learned Western painting under Professor A. Bastien. In 1938, the Royal Academy of Finr Arts awarded him a Golden Medal in recognition of his achievements. He also held several solo exhibitions in Brussels and exhibited his paintings together with Western artists such as Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). In 1946, he returned to his hometown and worked for Zhejiang and Shanhai Research Institutes of Literature and History. His works were exhibited in many cities in China and he was honored as "China's Van Gogh"
